In nearly 200 years (from 1807 to 2003), the population passed from 514 to 1422 inhabitants, notably by the Italian immigration, the addition of a small landowner city (the Cité des Rys) and of a council houses city (the Cité Vandeweghe where 6 lodgings are conceived to receive handicapped people in rolling chair) that widened the ancestral habitat center without the village doesn't become a "amorphous grouping village".
The present number of the villagers represents the quarter of the 5694 inhabitants of the entity of Engis.

Philosophical choices :

Only the Catholic religion possesses a place of cult in Hermalle-sous-Huy, in the church Saint-Martin.
This old chapel, that depended on the abbey of Flône, housed to the 11th century the Virgin of Hermalle, Sedes sapientiae of Hermalle-sous-Huy ; it stays currently to the Musées d'Art et d'Histoire du Cinquantenaire in Brussels. This austere statue, characteristic of the production of the second half of the11th century (toward 1070) in the Meuse is in polychrome and golden alder.
Partially rebuilt to the 16th century and dedicated in 1597 under the reign of the Prince Bishop of Liège Ernest de Bavière, the church was equipped to the 18th century with a tower fittedwith two faces of clock to 1 hand and a door to two lifts of which the decorated panels of style "Regency" constitute a remarkable joinery.
The bell-tower, surmounted of a short octagonal arrow sustaining a cross and a weathercock, locks three bells of which two date from the second half of the 20th century and replace those that the German soldiers requisitioned during the Second world War to make them to melt and to transform in guns.
The central, luminous nave, was revised to the 19th century at the time of the edification of the aisles. One can always see there a statue of the 15th century (Sainte-Marguerite), 7 other of the 17th century and the funerary stones of Charles de la Rivière (†1460) + Marie de Haccourt (†1457) & their son Englebert (†1440, died while coming back from the St. Sepulchre and buried to Rhodes), and of Arnoul de Bierset (†1543) + Marie de Momalle. According to different written, the funerary stone of Henri II de Hermalle (†1325), of his wife Julienne de Haneffe (†1318) and of their daughter Alix (†1356) should find itself of it.
Close to baptismal font, a beautiful Christ in wood; placed previously in the chapel enclosed in the north wall of the cemetery, it was replaced there in 1995 by a Christ of bronze.
To the rood screen, organ of "Moelingen" (19th century).
The cult is practiced Tuesdays (6 pm), Thursdays (8.30 am) and Sundays (9.30 am) by the vicar Fernand Nguyen that stays in the old native house of Jean-Gilles Jacob, become presbytery in 1842 - Rue Gerée 8 - tél. +32-(0)85-31.27.85.

Sedes sapientiae d'Hermalle-sous-Huy

Another philosophical option possesses a place of welcome in the village sinds 1983 : the Center of action layman of the French-speaking community welcomes the public every Wednesday and the 4th Saturday of the month, of 9 at 12 am (presence of a public writer) in the "Maison de la Laïcité" (old local house, rue Wérihet). Contact : P. Vanderheyden, 0495- 10 40 36.

Cemeteries :

The aisles of the church Saint-Martin were flanked previously of a cemetery surrounded with a wall.
The north part subsists, presenting a funeral tombstone to three figures (on the north side of the tower: Englebert de Haccourt †1415 + Marie de Wavre †1419 & their sons Jean †1405), another of the 17th century (in the wall of the church), some tombs of the 19th and 20th centuries and the neo-Gothic funeral chapel of the family de Potesta.
The south part was demolished in the years 1947 after the edification of a
new cemetery chaussée Terwagne (next to the Farm D'Haeyère, toward 1924). The bones, tombstones, crosses non asked by the families were buried in a hollow path of the Rue Magotte that became then a road.
Facing the porch of the church, a small cemetery was enclosed by the enlarging of the "Fermecastrale", in the beginning of the 20th century. It included the cenotaph of the Baron of Warzée of Hermalle. In a setting of Lourdes grotto (constructed to the 20th century.), flowers, candles and ex-votos always reveal the popular devotion.
